Oceanport Paddle Club’s Shrewsbury River Cleanup and SEA Paddle NYC @ OPC (Charity Paddle)

In May of 2021 Oceanport Paddle Club (OPC), with help from sponsors and volunteers, organized and executed a river cleanup along the shores of the Shrewsbury River. The event was a great success. Volunteer groups and individuals, from all around, gathered and cleaned up a large area of the Shrewsbury River shoreline and waterways. Volunteers collected trash from the waterways on paddleboards or kayaks. They launched from Oceanport Paddle Club, some on their own vessels while others used vessels from the OPC fleet. Land crews checked in at OPC, received all of their protective gloves, collection gear and a map with a QR code that provided them with turn by turn driving directions that navigated them to 14 different spots along the shores of the Shrewsbury River. The majority of the spots in Oceanport and a key location in Little Silver as well.

The organizing team took last year off so that extensive planning could be done and we are happy to announce that we will host another cleanup this year on June 24th and there will be a paddleboard race following the cleanup for kids and adults!
In 2023 we plan on doubling our efforts and expanding to locations in Long Branch and Monmouth Beach. We need your help in order to do this! How can you help?
Volunteers can choose task they are comfortable helping out with such as;
- Bring their own vessel (kayak, SUP or other)
- Rent a vessel (kayak or paddleboard, complimentary for volunteers from 10-1, quantities are limited).
- Drive or ride to a location along the shore (Maps will be provided)
- Assist with the paddleboard race (details to follow)
Thunder 106 will be broadcasting LIVE from the event and there will be promotional giveaways, including station merchandise, enter to win prize(s), games and more…
Following the cleanup, OPC will be endorsing a Paddleboard race organized and run by Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA), a local 501c3 committed to the cultural and environmental integrity of the sport of surfing. There will be different courses and age categories as well as a kids race the day of. More details to come in regards to the race.
